Understanding the potency of CO2 as a greenhouse gas

According to a notable article published on the Columbia Climate School’s website [^1], it is once again highlighted that carbon dioxide (CO2) plays a significant role in driving global warming. The informative piece clarifies the CO2’s chemical properties and how they impact the Earth’s atmospheric changes.

Just because something shares 0.04% of the given system does not imply that this value has a proportionally small impact on it too. Understanding the chemical properties of diverse elements and molecules explains how something, even minuscule, could possess the potency to cause extreme changes (see ocean acidification). However, the absence of this understanding and lack of elemental interdisciplinary knowledge (scientific illiteracy) causes people to interpret small numbers as “small influence” or as “no influence at all”.
