As a child who was born in the former Yugoslavia, I had the strangest opportunity in my life to witness the rise of clerical fascism, as well as the downfall of secularism within Yugoslav society and its political discourse. The next thing I remember was the beginning of ethnic/religious war, the destruction of human life, and the complete division of the Yugoslav federation. These events defined my decision to study law (still with a hidden passion for natural sciences) and to become a strong proponent of the enforcement of international criminal law and secularism as well. Secularism and laicism represent an essential framework for long-lasting peace and inclusion. Pursuing such a goal, a healthy political and scientific discourse is a must, where a scientifically literate public is its most important ingredient.
Human history shows that "the more the religious, esoteric, or pseudo-scientific-based claims are part of the moral or political compass, the greater the risk that a specific society slowly takes the road to pseudo-science." This slowly leads towards anti-secularism and ultimately to theocracy or fascism.
Therefore, I am actively supporting or working for organizations that strengthen or have the potential to elevate secularism, fact-checked political decision-making processes, and science.
